HISTORY:
At the 70th International Convention in Taipei 1987, the International Board passed a resolution to accept women as Lions members.  Although Lions Club International was formed in 1917, it took its time to recognize the significant contribution that women could make in the world of volunteerism.

In 1991, the then 7 years old Vancouver Chinatown Lioness Club planned to take this opportunity to convert to Lion members with voting rights so that they could contribute further to Lionism.  After careful considerations, 13 Lioness members decided to embrace this opportunity.  They gave the new club a name, extended invitations to their friends to join, and in May 1991, the Vancouver Pacific Lions Club was born.  At the Charter Ceremony on June 30, 1991, 30 charter members were inducted with over $9,000 in funds raised in the new club’s inaugural fund raising attempt.

ABOUT VANCOUVER PACIFIC LIONS CLUB:
The Vancouver Pacific Lions is an all women’s club and it is the desire of all the members to preserve this essence.  Our primary goal is to concentrate on the welfare of seniors, women and children.  Since the first year of the inception of our club, we adopted service projects, which we are continuing to date.  For over 15 years, we serve Chinese dim sum to the seniors monthly at the St. Vincent’s Hospital – Langara Extended Care Home.  We have also been sponsoring five foster children at the Hong Kong Po Leung Kuk since our first year.

Our members are all talented, energetic, professional and dedicated lions.  Our tailored, eye-catching uniform was designed by our Past President Margaret Kwok and received lots of credits from others.  We have 8 charter members in the club that have laid the solid foundation with lions experience to guide the club for a better future (PDG Rita Fok, PZC Angela Lam, PP Julie Liu, Lion Yolanda Leung, Lion Terry Mar, PP Kitty Mar, PP Heddy Wong and Lion Judy Ng).

It is with the admission of women into Lions Clubs International that makes it possible for our club to produce a District Governor, four past zone chairpersons (Lion Angela Lam, Lion Rita Fok, Lion Teresa Ng, and Lion Grace Hwo) and a District Cabinet Secretary.   Our club is so proud to have Lion Rita Fok to take up the responsibility as District Governor for the term 2006-2007 who has received District Governor Excellence Award in 2008 and thus contributing more to Lionism.

OUR FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES & COMMUNITY SERVICES:
We are actively involved in organizing our own fundraising events since 1991.   We also participate in the Gaming Commission of the Province, volunteering in casino duties in the earlier years, then bingo duties in recent years and of course, sharing in the deep pockets of gaming proceeds for donation to charities.  We have organized fundraising events that include 9 Halloween Charity Balls, 3 Mah-Jong competitions, a 10th Charter Anniversary, one fashion show, 2 joining fundraising functions with the Vancouver Broadway Lions Club and a Karaoke Dinner.

ABOUT OUR NEW CENTURY LIONS:
Closer to home, over 12 years ago, we sponsored a Leo Club and started training new leaders in 1994.    DG Rita Fok was the Guiding Lion of the Leo Club and has been actively involved with the training of the young Leos uninterruptedly for 12 terms.  Practically almost all the members have served, at one time or another, as Leo Advisors throughout these 12 years.  Our primary focus for the Leos Club has been leadership development and fostering a sense of volunteerism and community spirit among young people from 12 to 19 years of age.  The Leos are also focused in raising funds and performing service activities for the visually impaired, and in assisting in the fund raising endeavors of the Pacific Lions.

On APRIL 7, 2007, Pacific Leos Club has transformed into Vancouver Pacific New Century Lions Club. They have won the Musical Performance Contest in the MD19 Annual Convention at Wenatchee in May, 2007. Congratulations!
